Recap of 2020 Fleet 21 Rowe/Mast

OYC Rowe Mast
As Fleet cptn. Steve Rhodes hit send announcing to the fleet that their season opener would take place the weekend of Nov 3, San Diego's powers that be also hit send to announce the lifting of Covid restrictions on boating. This meant the Hot Rums were on, and on Nov 3! The date was quickly changed to Oct 31 - Nov 1, but Mission Bay's regatta was also back on! The date was again changed to Oct 3- 4.
With only one week notice, the race was on!
Saturday the fleet was met with a lurking fog covering the harbor. The race committee set the line for and prepped for five windward leeward races to a mark they promised was out there, somewhere, up near the rocks! As the horn blew for the first start, six boats disappeared into the haze. As the boats returned breaking the haze out front was Stu Robertson with new crewmate Max, a very capable OYC junior sailor, closely followed by last years champions, Dave Stong and Kent Stevenson.
As the day went on the fog came and went, as did the wind, blowing from the western sky anywhere from 3 - 6 knots, and ending with a one lap 2 knot drag race!
Day two the fog was gone and the wind was back, and the committee, comprised of the regatta's namesakes Hugh Mast and Larry Rowe, fleet 21's godfathers, joined by Hugh's wife Stevie, and ex Lido racer Phil O'brite squared the line and prepped the fleet for four more races.
In the end Stu Robertson owned the weekend and took home the Rowe/Mast perpetual where he'll keep it safe until next season, when he'll have to bring it back and defend it! Last years Champs Dave and Kent gave Stu a run but in the end landed in second place, followed by Jaimie Gregory, who traded crew from his mother Jean on Saturday, to his daughter Avery on Sunday. Steve Rhodes had Andrea Powell handling jib duties like a pro, proudly bringing in the fourth place spot. Jeff Johnston raced Saturday with workmate Guatam, taking Sunday off to help around the house! Brian Ganz and wife Jenny came to play and fill the boat six position on Sunday. Rumor has it that Brian is now on the Dan Marino diet, hoping to shed a bit of baby weight before the next regatta! good luck Brian!
Fleet 21 will have its next regatta on Nov. 15.
Please come and join us. Your fees have already been paid, you might as well race!
